An Ecology of the City: Nocturnal Urbanism in the Gulf

The Arabian Desert is an evolved landscape. From once savannah grassland it is now an arid subtropical desert that pushes human physiology to its greatest extremes. Why then are public spaces in the Gulf flourishing? The Gulf has seen an increasing diversity of nocturnal public spaces in its cities. The crop of new public spaces that are emerging in Gulf cities deserve greater credit then they currently receive. These are areas where those previously disassociated urban realms overlap. They are exceedingly varied but are hosting a mixing of urban ecologies that are enriching Gulf cities. From the Dubai Canal Promenade to the Safa Park, from the public realm of Souk Waqif in Doha to the leisure landscape of Global Village in Dubai, from the streets of City Walk in Dubai to the Corniche or Abu Dhabi these nocturnal spaces are redefining the ecology of Gulf cities. This presentation aims to plot a trajectory that provides a broad vision of where nocturnal ecology of the Gulf may lead.

Salt Barriers for Sustainable Landscaping Designs for Saline Sand Areas: Case Study Presentation – 1 Million sq. Metres Private Project in Abu Dhabi

  • In deserts and arid regions, the groundwater is often saline and the water table can be relatively close to the surface
  • The capillary rise above the water table brings dissolved salts near to the surface of the ground. This results in severe problems for vegetation and the foundations of building structures
  • Goal:
    • Protection of marble surfacing on pedestrian and vehicular roads
    • Avoiding salination of vegetation

The Future of Biophilia

  • Biophilia is the apparent instinctive preference we have for certain natural geometries, forms, and characteristics within our environments
  • Biophilic cities are of enormous interest to urban designers and landscape architects, as besides supplying environmental services, they makes us happier, healthier, less stressed and all-round nicer people
  • In a rapidly urbanizing world where an anticipated 2.5 billion people will be added to our cities in the next 30 years, resourcing the creation of these biophilic spaces will be increasingly difficult
  • So how could we look at providing alternative means of supplying this most essential requirement of health and wellbeing for our urban dwellers?
